Foods and treats with cannabidiol (CBD) are becoming increasingly available on the market, reflecting the growing popularity of CBD as a supplement for both humans and animals. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence for the safety and efficacy of long-term oral CBD supplementation in dogs.
This study investigated the safety and tolerability of a broad-spectrum CBD distillate (without THC) in healthy dogs over a period of 6 months. Twenty dogs received daily CBD capsules at a dose of 4 mg/kg body weight, while a control group of twenty dogs received placebo capsules.
A comprehensive examination of the dogs' health was carried out throughout the study. Blood samples, urine samples and veterinary examinations were carried out regularly. Dog owners also completed surveys on the dogs' well-being and quality of life. The results showed that the daily dose of 4 mg CBD/kg body weight was well tolerated by the dogs.
There were no signs of adverse effects on the dogs' health or well-being. A transient increase in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was observed in some dogs in the CBD group.
However, this increase was not associated with any other adverse effects and may have been due to an increase in bone formation. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that long-term CBD supplementation in healthy dogs at a dose of 4 mg/kg body weight is safe and well tolerated.
Benefits of CBD Supplementation in Dogs:
-Can have anti-inflammatory effects -Can have pain-relieving effects -Can have anti-anxiety effects -Can improve sleep quality
Risks of CBD Supplementation in Dogs:
-Limited scientific documentation -Can interact with other medications -Can have side effects in some dogs
Dosage:
The optimal dose of CBD for dogs has not yet been determined. It is important to consult with a veterinarian before giving CBD to your dog.
In conclusion:
This study provides promising results regarding the safety and tolerability of long-term CBD supplementation in healthy dogs. Further research is needed to confirm these results and to investigate the effects of CBD on specific diseases in dogs.
