Positive effects of CBD on dogs' stress: A research review

Sep 30, 2024Elisabeth Jonasson

Many dogs experience stress during car rides, which can negatively affect both dogs and humans. A new study has investigated how daily dosing of cannabidiol (CBD) over a period of 6 months affects stress in dogs during car rides.

Background

Dogs are often exposed to situations that can cause stress or other negative emotional states. Car rides are a common example of such a situation where many dogs experience stress and anxiety.

Study Overview

The study aimed to evaluate whether multiple doses of a tetrahydrocannabinol-free cannabidiol (CBD) distillate over a period of 6 months could positively affect stress measures in dogs. In a parallel design study, dogs underwent a series of short car rides where various physiological and behavioral measures were collected before, during, and after the test.

Results, significant changes in several stress-related measures

The study showed significant changes in several stress-related measures, including serum cortisol, heart rate, heart rate variability, whining, lip licking, yawning, and qualitative behavior ratings from baseline to test. The CBD treatment had a positive effect on some of these measures, indicating a significant reduction in dogs' stress compared to the placebo group.

Conclusion, CBD can help reduce stress in dogs

This study provides important insights into how CBD can help reduce stress in dogs during car rides. Further research is needed to fully understand the complex effect of CBD on dogs' emotional well-being.
